Responsible to: Managing Director of Dhow Countries Music Academy
Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA) is the only music school in Zanzibar. The academy preserves, develops and promotes the unique musical heritage of Zanzibar and the Swahili coast. It was established in 2002 and throughout the years it had more than 1500 students. The school provides a unique opportunity for the inhabitants of Zanzibar and the dhow regions to study music both related to their cultural background and more global genres of music. In addition special
workshops, seminars, concerts, exchange visits and networking activities take place throughout the year and the DCMA has developed into a vibrant national and international musical and cultural meeting point.
Responsibilities Academics:
  • Oversee and take responsibility for academic quality, rigor and teaching delivery of the DCMA
  • Develop educational process and policies to meet curriculum goals
  • Develop of new academic programs
  • Develop educational process and policies to meet curriculum goals
  • Plan teaching staff meetings, orientations, trainings and workshops
  • Conduct internal curriculum reviews to ensure content is current and relevant, and meets quality standards
  • Mentor Assistant Academic Director
  • Finish preparing publishable Academic Prospectus of DCMA
Local and international collaborations:
  • Supervise the various stages of the DCMA activities in Indian Ocean Historical Sound Archives (a digital archival platform project music)
  • Initiate and continue academic collaborations with national and international organizations
  • Initiate and organize conferences/symposiums/workshops
Administrative:
  • Responsibility for the annual academic plan
  • Work with administration to record grades and provide transcripts
  • Preparing grant proposals for academic programs/workshops/courses
  • Submit every month report of activities
Others:
  • Being of general assistance to the development and growth of DCMA
  • Support and participate in college and community related activities
  • Represent the Academy, where appropriate
Qualifications
  • A minimum level of Masters degree training with specializations in Music and Education;
  • At least 5 years of academic work in teaching and/or education administration;
  • Strong background in developing music education programmes
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent command of English; knowledge of Swahili will be an advantage
  • Experience in preparing grant applications

It would be beneficial if the Academic Director had

  • Past experience in project management in developing countries
  • Experience in the music traditions of Tanzania, including Zanzibar

Post: Fundraising Manager

Responsibilities:
  • Set and achieve realistic time limited fundraising targets, agreed in consultation with Managing Director and the Board of Trustees
  • Create a sustainable and diverse fundraising portfolio, with funding streams including individuals, major gifts, corporates, community, events, trusts/foundations and other grant makers, with appropriate priorities
  • Continue and develop current fundraising activities
  • Support the development of large-scale multi-country funding proposals to international funders
  • Develop fundraising and publicity materials for awareness-and fundraising.
  • Support advocacy work with key in-country partners, government ministries, funders and international agencies.
  • Raise awareness of the DCMA and its work at local and national levels, e.g. giving talks to groups or seeking opportunities with the media
  • Manage and update databases to record donor contact and preference information
  • Create a regular quarterly newsletter to share with supporters, partners and funders
  • Continually seek new and appropriate contacts and partnerships with relevant individuals or organisations
  • Lead communication with key donors and funders with the aim of cultivating, growing and sustaining long – term funding and collaboration

 Qualifications

  • Strong track record of securing funding for charitable or NGO activities from a variety of funding streams, preferably in the culture field in developing countries
  • Proven ability to build, manage and develop key stakeholder, client and donor rel
  • An understanding of the culture field in Africa
  • Excellent command of English; knowledge of Swahili will be an advantage
  • High standard of computer literacy
