education for children
As the only music school in Zanzibar, our mission is to share skills and experiences with the youngest. Music education is much more than enjoyable hobby. It is incredibly important to the development of children. As there is no music education in Zanzibari schools, DCMA is trying to fill that gap.
DCMA is now providing free music lessons for more than 100 kids in 6 primary schools in Zanzibar. We do that for free because it is a way to give back to the communities that had assisted the DCMA throughout the years. Learning music has many benefits for children. It fosters their academic, social, and emotional growth. It develops language skills. Studies have shown that those who undergo music education have better results in standarized tests than the norm. They also achieve higher grades in high school. Music education develops skills that are necessary in the workplace. It focuses on “doing,” as opposed to observing. Employers are looking for multidimensional workers with the sort of flexible and supple intellects that music education helps to create.
One of mothers whose 12-year-old son benefits from DCMA music lessons says: “Since Omar is learning music he became more patient, his teamwork skills increased, he is more disciplined.” She also observed he better in reading and maths. Her son adds that music lessons are a great way to learn and have fun at the same time.
